“SO, MERCEDES, TELL me about yourself,” Viola said after dinner. After clearing the dishes, we all moved into the den where Arthur was showing Sparling his cigar collection, while Ali seemed entranced by Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which was playing on the large flat-screen that sat on top of the small fireplace. “There’s so much we need to catch up on.”

“There really isn’t much to say,” I said. Even though I usually loved talking about myself, I just wanted to skip answering questions about me and start asking questions about Sparling’s biological parents.

“Well, what is there to say?” Viola pressed.

“Well, um, I’m eighteen. I grew up with my mom and her husband here in D.C. And I plan on being a fashion designer.”

“You grew up here in D.C.?!” Out of everything I’d said, the part about living in D.C. seemed to be the only thing that caught her attention. A hand fluttered to her mouth again, almost out of habit. “All these years you’ve been living in the same city . . .”

“Actually, I have some questions for you,” I cut in before she could ramble on about how amazing it was that we’d been living in the same city for all these years and had never known about one another.

Viola leaned back in her chair, clasping her papery hands together. A smile lit up her face, her eyes twinkling. “Of course; what would you like to know?”

“I know Professor Sparling was adopted,” I said. A flash of surprise appeared on her face as I continued, “and I was wondering if you knew anything about his biological parents.”

“Oh.” Hurt filled her face (probably because I didn’t ask anything about her), but I ignored it. I had things to take care of, and worrying about hurt feelings wasn’t one of them. “Why are you curious?”

Okay, now it was time for a lie. Hoping I sounded convincing enough, I said, “A genetics project for my biology class.”

She pressed her lips together into a tight line. I waited for her to speak, and was growing frustrated as the seconds ticked by without her saying anything. Finally, after I thought she wasn’t going to talk to me, she said, “I don’t know anything about his biological father, but his biological mother’s name is Evelyn Foster. She was forced to give up Allan a few months after he was born.”

“Why?” The more information I got, the more I could understand what made me so different than everybody else.

Viola shrugged her narrow shoulders. “I’m not exactly sure. Last I heard, the girl was unstable–rattling on about people with magic and other crazy stuff.”

“Do you know where I could find her?”

“I’m sorry, I don’t.”

I opened my mouth to ask another question, but before I could, Viola stood up quickly to her feet as if to stop me. Rude. Seriously, what kind of grandmother cut off her own granddaughter from speaking?

“Why don’t we all get some rest? Tomorrow is Christmas, and we’ll get up early.”

“Alright.” Arthur yawned, as if the idea of sleep just occurred to him.
